How a United Airlines group booking works

United Airlines treats 10 or more passengers travelling on the same flight as a group. That moves your booking out of the public fare buckets and onto a contracted group fare, which behaves differently in three ways that matter to an organiser.

The price is fixed when you book, not when you pay. Public fares climb as seats sell, so a party of 30 booked individually over several weeks can end up paying three different prices. A group contract locks one fare for the whole block from the day the deposit clears.

You do not need the names yet. Seats are held against the group, not against individuals. You supply the passenger list before the ticketing deadline, which is usually several weeks out. Anyone who drops off the list before that point can normally be released without penalty, within the percentage written into your contract.

Everyone sits together. Seats come out of one block on one flight, rather than whatever singles happen to be left in the cabin.

United Airlines hubs and connections

United operates through 6 main hubs, which determines how your group routes:

  • Chicago O’Hare
  • Denver
  • Houston
  • Newark
  • San Francisco
  • Washington Dulles

As a Star Alliance carrier, United group fares can often be written through to partner-operated flights on the same ticket, which keeps a single booking reference for the whole journey.

When to book

Three to eleven months before departure is the practical window. Each flight carries a finite amount of group inventory, and on United the peak-season departures, holiday dates and convention weeks are committed first. Last-minute group space does exist, but it prices poorly and rarely seats everyone together.

United Airlines group booking FAQs

Does United allow a group booking with 10 passengers?

Yes. Ten travellers on a shared itinerary is United’s group threshold and unlocks group inventory and deposit terms.

Can a United group split across two flights?

It can. When a single flight cannot hold the whole party, we split the group across adjacent departures or route part of it through a second hub, and keep both segments on one booking reference.

Are seat assignments included on a United group fare?

Standard seats are assigned from the group block. Economy Plus or preferred seating can be added per passenger at the published rate.
